Oilers
1972 - Present (WHA/NHL)
The Alberta Oilers was one of the twelve original teams of the World Hockey Association. The name of the team was changed to the
Edmonton Oilers for its second season. Back


Anaheim
Mighty Ducks
1993 - Present (NHL)
The Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the
Florida Panthers were created as NHL expansion teams in 1993. Back


Atlanta
Flames
1972 - 1982 (NHL)
The NHL granted expansion franchises for Atlanta and Long Island for the 1972-73 season. The Flames played in Atlanta until 1982 when they moved to Calgary. Back

Thrashers
1999 - (NHL)
In June 1997, the NHL gave Atlanta an expansion franchise. This will be the second NHL team to play in Atlanta. Back

Baltimore
Blades
1974 - 1975 (WHA)
Baltimore was the last stop for the WHA team. At the beginning of 1974 season, the team was playing in
Los Angeles as the Sharks. Then they moved to Detroit and became the Michigan Stags. The final leg of the trip landed the team in Baltimore. Unfortunately, none of these moves could prevent the team from folding. Back

The
Toronto Toros moved to Birmingham for the 1976-77 season. The WHA Bulls played until the NHL-WHA merger in 1978. Back


Boston

1924 - Present (NHL)

One of the Original Six, Boston was the first American city to receive an NHL team.

Americans
1941 - 1942 (NHL)
The
Americans ended its franchise history in Brooklyn. After moving from New York's Madison Square Garden, they won only eight games and finished last in the league. Back

Sabres
1970 - Present (NHL)
The Sabres joined the NHL expansion along with the
Vancouver Canucks in 1970. Back

Cowboys
1975 - 1977 (WHA)
Calgary received its WHA team from Vancouver in 1975. The Cowboys, along with four other WHA teams, folded in 1977.

The Flames
moved to Calgary for the 1982-83 season. Back

Seals
1967 - 1975 (NHL)
The California Seals was one of the six teams in the 1967 NHL expansion that doubled the size of the league. The Seals changed their name from
Oakland to California in 1970. The team moved to Cleveland in 1976. Back

Hurricanes
1997 - Present (NHL)
The Carolina Hurricanes moved from
Hartford for the 1997-98 season. Back


Chicago
Blackhawks
1926 - Present (NHL)

One of the Original Six, the Black Hawks joined the NHL in 1926 along with the
Rangers and the Cougars. Back

Cougars
1972 - 1976 (WHA)
The WHA Cougars was one of twelve teams to play in the Association's first year. The team disbanded along with
Denver and Minnesota in 1976. Back


Cincinnati
Stingers
1975 - 1978 (WHA)
Cincinnati joined the WHA with the Stingers. The team stayed with the WHA for the rest of its existance. However, the team was not among the four WHA teams selected for merger into the NHL in 1978.

The Barons, fromerly the
Seals existed for two seasons in the NHL. The team merged into the Minnesota North Stars. Back

The Avs, formerly the
Nordiques, moved to the Mile High City for the 1995-96 season. Back

Kansas City Scouts moved to Denver in 1976. The team relocated to New Jersey in 1982. Back


Columbus

2000 - (NHL)
In June 1997, the NHL awarded Columbus with an expansion franchise.

Stars
1993 - Present (NHL)
Formerly the
Minnesota North Stars, the team moved into its Dallas home in 1993. Back


Detroit
Cougars, Falcons, Red Wings
1926 - Present (NHL)

One of the Original Six, Detroit owners joined the NHL in 1926 by purchasing the Victoria Cougars from the defunct Pacific Coast Hockey League. Four years later, during the depression, the Cougars became the Falcons. Then in 1932, James Norris Sr. purchased the team and named it after his old hockey team, the Winged Wheelers.

1972 - Present (WHA/NHL)

The Edmonton Oilers were one of the twelve original teams of the World Hockey Association. The name of the team was changed from the Alberta Oilers for the 1973-74 season. The Oilers are the last WHA team still in existence.

Panthers
1993 - Present (NHL)
The Florida Panthers and the
Anaheim Mighty Ducks were created as NHL expansion teams in 1993. Back

Hamilton
Tigers
1920 - 1925 (NHL)
The Hamilton Tigers were formed from the failing
Quebec Bulldogs. The franchise stayed in Hamilton, Ontario until the 1925 move to New York. Back


Hartford
Whalers
1972 - 1997 (WHA/NHL)
The
New England Whalers began as a WHA team. It played throughout the seven year lifespan of the Association and was merged into the NHL along with Quebec, Edmonton and Winnipeg. The Whale moved into the Hartford Civic Center in 1974 after residing in Boston as the New England Whalers. The Whalers played in Springfield, MA for the 1977-78 season after the Mall's roof collapsed from heavy snow. The Whalers played its last season in 1996-97 before moving to Carolina. Back

The Aeros played during the entire lifespan of the WHA. Since the team was not selected for NHL merger in 1978, the team folded.

Kansas City and

LA was one of the six cities that received expansion teams for the 1967-68 season.

1972 - 1974 (WHA)
The Sharks played for the first two years of the WHA. They then moved to
Michigan, then to Baltmore during a single season.. Back

Michigan
Stags
1974 - 1975 (WHA)
The second city for the team, Detroit had the former
Sharks for a part of one season. The team moved further eastward to Baltimore where it spent the rest of its last season. Back


Minnesota
Fighting Saints
1972 - 1977 (WHA)
One of the first twelve WHA teams, the Fighting Saints lasted until 1976. A comeback attempt for the 1976-77 season failed to save the team.

The North Stars team was a part of the six city NHL expansion of 1967. The team relocated to Dallas, Texas and shortened its name to the

The Wild will join the NHL along with the

One of the five teams in the CHA. The All-Montreals and the

The Maroons and

The Nationals were one of the five teams in the CHA. The team disbanded along with the

Shamrocks
1910 - 1916 (CHA)
The Shamrocks were one of the five teams in the CHA. The team was merged into the NHA, but was disbanded prior to 1917.

The Whalers resided in Boston with its NHL nemesis, the
Boston Bruins. The Whale moved into the new Hartford Civic Center in 1974 and changed its name to the Hartford Whalers. Back

New Jersey received the team from
Colorado in 1982. Back

Knights
1973 - 1975 (WHA)
The
Golden Blades moved to New Jersey in 1973. The Knights resided in New Jersey for two years before moving to San Diego. Back

Americans
1925 - 1941 (NHL)
New York received its first hockey team from
Hamilton, Ontario in 1925. The Americans were the first hockey team to use Madison Square Garden. The team spent its last year in Brooklyn in 1941. Back

The Raiders changed franchise names in 1973. The next season, they changed

1967 - 1975 (NHL)
The California Seals was one of the six teams in the 1967 NHL expansion that doubled the size of the league. The Seals changed their name from Oakland to
California in 1970. The team moved to Cleveland in 1976. Back


Ottawa
Senators
1910 - 1934, 1992 - Present (CHA/NHA/NHL)

The city of Ottawa can trace its professional hockey presence back to 1910 where it was one of five teams in the Canadian Hockey Association. The CHA was merged into the National Hockey Association which was then transformed into the National Hockey League in 1917. The Ottawa team survived these changes until 1934 when it moved to
St. Louis. The city lived without a professional team until the creation of the World Hockey Association in 1972, when they hosted the brief presence of the Nationals. Nearly two decades later, Ottawa received its current Senators franchise in 1992. Back

One of the twelve original WHA teams. The team played in Ottawa for only one season before moving to
Toronto. Back

1967 - Present (NHL)

Pittsburgh's second NHL franchise was granted 37 years after the
Pirates had moved on. The Pens, cross state rivals Flyers and four other expansion teams were create in that year. Back

Pirates
1925 - 1930 (NHL)
Pittsburgh's first NHL team, the Pirates, was the second American team to join the NHL (behind Boston). During the Depression, the team moved to Philadelphia in an attempt to save the franchise. Back

Bulldogs
1919 - 1921 (NHL)
The short lived Bulldogs relocated to
Hamilton and became the Tigers. Back

Nordiques
1972 - 1996 (WHA/NHL)
One of the original twelve WHA teams, the Nordiques transferred over to the NHL after the Association dissolved. The team relocated geographically to
Colorado where they won the Stanley Cup that year. Back

San Diego
Mariners
1975 - 1977 (WHA)
The former
New Jersey Knights changed coasts for the fourth season of the WHA. The team played its last season in 1977. Back


San Jose
Sharks
1991 - Present (NHL)
San Jose became the first expansion team since the WHA merger in 1979. The Sharks were later joined by exapansion teams in
Tampa Bay and Ottawa. Back


St. Louis
Blues
1967 - Present (NHL)
The Blues were one of the six expansion teams which doubled the size of the league.

The Millionares played in the PCHA and competed for the Stanley Cup against the NHL. The team won the cup in 1914.

The Caps joined

1972 - 1996 (WHA/NHL)
One of four WHA teams to survive the NHL merger, the Jets played until 1996 where they were relocated to Arizona and became the
